Did you ever wonder about those kids, you know those kids- the ones in every school, who are made fun of for everything ? You know who I mean, the ones who are made miserable about everything from their breath, to the way their hair looks, to their shoelaces, to the way their clothes are. Everything is subject to derision and a subject of comment by all the other kids in the school. And they're the scapegoats, they're the ones that everybody, even teachers sometimes, dump all their bad and hostile feelings.
Well, I was one of those kids, and I have spent some thinking about how it was that my brother and sister and I became the family that was picked on. Part of it was that we lived far away from everybody else at school. The bus would not even come to our street. We walked a mile to school. And my mother was really not interested in participating in any of the school kind of things, the Ladies Sodality, the bake sales, the rummage sales or any of that kind of stuff . And, let's face it, mine was not a graceful growing up.
